Wildlife: Plants & Flowers
This plant may look benign from a distance, but its stems and leaves are covered with many sharp spines, making it a plant
that you definitely want to avoid. It has had many medicinal uses throughout Alaskan culture.
Towns & Cities; Rural Communities
Seldovia is a small Sugpiaq village located on the southern shore of Kachemak Bay, across the bay from Homer. In August of 2012, I spent
a week chaperoning some youth at a culture camp. During that week we camped on the beach across a small bay from Sedovia.
||Despite being a somewhat rural community, Seldovia is short airplane or boat ride away and so receives many visitors during the
summer tourist season. Therefore, the town is pretty visitor-friendly with a paved main road, accessible shops, a hotel, and several
inns and bed & breakfasts.
||Many artifacts from Seldovia's recent history are found on the beaches and shores, including old worm-eaten pilings, abandoned
barges, and discarded incinerators.
||A couple views of Seldovia from across the bay, from the beach and through the arch at Elephant Rock.
